About Martin Guinness and artworks

Welcome to my website, whether you want buy original abstract art or just check out images of my work (below).

I am a contemporary abstract painter based in Australia working within a lineage of lyrical abstraction (the same school as Wassily Kandinsky, Helen Frankenthaler, and Cy Twombly) exploring memory, nature, and perception.. I welcome anyone who wants to buy abstract art, and is looking for work suitable for  contemporary interiors needing a calm, atmospheric focal point. My work sits between landscape memory and emotional abstraction. My practice explores perception, memory, and the natural world, favouring contemplation and emotional resonance over gestural immediacy or spectacle.

Working primarily in acrylics on canvas, I build layered, textured surfaces through a considered and intuitive process. Rather than relying on spontaneous action, each painting develops slowly, allowing forms, colours, and rhythms to emerge through sustained engagement with the surface. This approach reflects an interest in how meaning accumulates over time — through memory, attention, and lived experience.

My paintings are often informed by the natural world, not as representation, but as felt experience: light, atmosphere, movement, and the subtle shifts that occur between inner and outer worlds. The work seeks to create spaces for quiet reflection, inviting viewers to slow down and engage with ambiguity, stillness, and emotional nuance.

Each piece functions as both a visual anchor and an atmospheric field, where their distinctive surfaces create a sense of calm, depth, and quiet contemplation. My work is often chosen for modern residential and architectural spaces

All work is for sale and is generally sold unframed. Please contact the artist at lifedancer.publish@gmail.com for details.

Drawing on a background in film, writing/storytelling, and psychology, my work navigates the tension between structure and intuition. Each painting evolves through a process of layering and response, allowing the surface to reveal its own internal logic over time.

Regeneration and Renewal.jpg

'Regeneration and Renewal' explores the expressive potential of gesture and chromatic intensity. This large painting presents a dialogue between visceral motion and meditative stillness.

'Yatra', meaning "journey" in Sanskrit, with its sweeping arcs and intersecting lines traverse a radiant yellow field, suggesting movement, transition, and the fluid geometry of experience.

Beneath Still Waters.jpg

'Beneath Still Waters'  grew out of a desire to work within calm while allowing subtle tensions to surface. Rather than directing the image toward a fixed meaning, I allowed the painting to unfold as a kind of listening exercise, producing a highly calming result.

''Oh the Morning Glory', a feature painting, unfolds like a burst of beautiful colours awakening—an abstracted garden moment caught at the very instant light touches bloom. Modern interior art to enjoy.

Legacy of the Golden Dragon_edited.jpg

''Birth of a Golden Dragon' is a large, heavily textured abstract meditation on fortune, vitality, and the momentum of “becoming”. The interplay of radiant red and shimmering gold evokes both cultural symbolism and personal aspiration – red as the pulse of life and energy, gold as the promise of prosperity and achievement.

'The Bringer of Joy and Happiness', destined to do just that on a daily basis.

Manifesto_edited.jpg

'Coelicus', inspired one day by lying on my back in the garden as two airplanes streamed above.

'A Manifesto for Vulnerability', suitable for a home or an office wall, delves into the radical act of openness — not as a passive state, but as a luminous gesture of courage in an age defined by retreat and concealment.

The Goddesses of Spring.jpg

  Chloris                     Aphrodite                     Kali                       Helios

The Goddesses of Spring is a series of abstract expressionist works that contemplate nature as a living lineage. Each painting presents a single bloom emerging from a shared field of soft, atmospheric pink — together they evoke a sisterhood of natural forces — related, yet distinctly individual.

New Lucious Dreams.jpg

'The Kiss', an abstract view of the meeting of two souls, multicoloured and multi-faceted

'Traces of Spring', where vivid green and blue gestures appear to drift across a textured pink field, loosely bounded by a network of fine, dark lines, reflects how memory operates: fractured, layered, and gently contradictory

'Luscious Dreams'. A gorgeous explosion of colour to brighten anyone's day, and add joy to the room.

'The Phantom Galaxy'.. An abstract view of Galaxy M74 (commonly called The Phantom Galaxy), a grand-design spiral galaxy located roughly 32 million light-years away in the constellation Pisces.

'Incendio'. With its interplay of texture and hue, this large work engages the emotive potential of chromatic saturation and gestural immediacy to evoke a terrain of sensory intensity.through the layering of incandescent reds, striking oranges, and spontaneous linear disruptions

What Rises, Remains.jpg

'What Rises Remains'. This work continues my exploration of perception, emergence, and the emotional resonance of colour and surface.

'The Three Communities Series' Three smaller works - mixed media on canvas and board

'Fluvius'. With a palette saturated with dense greens, aqueous blues, and flashes of red and pink, I explore the visceral dialogue between movement and matter, invoking a visual topography that resists fixed interpretation.

Dragon.jpg

'Birth of the Golden Dragon'. A large abstract meditation on fortune, vitality, and the momentum of “becoming”. The luscious interplay of radiant red and shimmering gold evokes both cultural symbolism and personal aspiration, with the promise of prosperity and achievement.

The Space the Wind Carries.jpg

'The Space the Wind Carries'. A very large work - acrylic on board - unfolds as a constellation of textured colour-fields - loose, atmospheric formations that drift across a pale ground. Rust reds, deep greens, ochres and indigos settle in cloud-like clusters, as if marking fleeting states of weather or memory.

Tree-Sea Change.jpg

'TreeSea Change', exploring a time in one's life for something new. Acrylic on board.

'Memorising' is a vibrant abstract expressionist work that draws inspiration from the inner architecture of the brain – specifically a memory-related brain cell.

Joseph.jpg

'Joseph's New Coat', drawn from the bible story of Joseph's coat of many colours.

Fragments.jpg

'Fragments of a Memory'. This abstract work navigates the space between form and feeling, intention and instinct. Vibrant red masses, edged with yellow, suggest presence - bold, pulsing, and alive

Summer Joy.jpg

'Summer Joy' is an exploration of the exuberance that I feel in the presence of nature’s vitality - its colours, its rhythms, its capacity to uplift.

Eruption of Silence.jpg

'Eruption of Silence'. This work emerged from an exploration of gesture and spontaneity — the moment where control gives way to instinct. The yellow ground represents both light and intensity, a space of emotional heat. Onto it, I introduced red, black, and white as opposing forces: passion, shadow, and spirit.

Internal Landscapes.jpg

'Internal Landscapes' This painting explores the tension between intensity and release through gestural fields of red and pink, interrupted by cooler turquoise forms. The composition suggests shifting internal landscapes—states of pressure, pause, and permeability—where colour becomes both structure and emotion.

Mapping the Invisible.jpg

''Mapping the Invisible'.. This work emerges from a fascination with the unseen structures that guide our lives. In the end, this painting feels to me like a map that cannot be read in conventional terms, but one that resonates on a personal level
